Moving home with Octopus Energy: moving out and moving in
How to tell Octopus you are moving out, take Octopus with you, or set up supply at a new home that Octopus already supplies.

Short answer
Moving out: tell Octopus your new address and your move dates through your online account. Your tariff and Direct Debit can come with you. Moving into a home Octopus already supplies: register through Octopus’s move-in page, and you start on Flexible Octopus. Either way your supply carries on, and you should take meter readings on moving day.
If you are moving out
Use the moving-out option in your Octopus account. It asks for your new address and the dates you leave the old home and arrive at the new one. Tell Octopus as early as you can, though late notice is accepted too.
If you take Octopus with you, Octopus says your tariff and your Direct Debit amount stay the same at first, and it may suggest a new payment once it sees your usage in the new home. If you do not want to take Octopus with you, it closes the old account and sends a final bill.
If you are moving in
If Octopus already supplies your new home, register through its move-in page with your postcode and address. New occupiers start on Flexible Octopus, its standard variable tariff, and can change tariff afterwards.
If another supplier is in place, you are supplied by them from the day you get the keys. You can still switch to Octopus once you have moved in.
Moving-day readings
Take readings at both properties on the day you leave and the day you arrive, with dated photos. They split the usage between you and the previous or next occupier, so nobody pays for anyone else’s energy.
- Old home: final reading on the day you leave.
- New home: opening reading on the day you arrive.
- Two-rate meters: record both day and night registers.
Smart tariffs and moving
A smart tariff such as Agile, Go or Intelligent Go needs a working smart meter at the new home. If the new property has an older or non-communicating meter, you may need a smart meter installed before the tariff can apply there.
Questions people ask
Will my power be cut off when I move?
No. Supply stays on at both properties. Only the account holder and tariff change.
Can I keep my Octopus tariff when I move?
Octopus says your tariff carries over when you take it with you. Smart tariffs also depend on the new home having a suitable working smart meter.
What tariff am I on when I move into a home Octopus supplies?
Flexible Octopus, its standard variable tariff. You can change to another tariff once your account is set up.
