What is Octopus Flux?
Octopus Flux is a smart time-of-use electricity tariff built for homes with a battery or solar. It has a cheap window in the small hours and a dearer early-evening band, and its prices update daily rather than quarterly.
What are the Flux off-peak hours?
Flux's cheap window runs from 02:00 to 05:00 in London time: three hours, and later in the night than Go's. From 16:00 to 19:00 the rate is at its highest instead. The rest of the day sits between the two. The values change daily even though the times do not, so the table on this page is the one to read.
How often do Flux prices change?
Flux prices update daily, unlike Go which has fixed rates. This means you can benefit from lower wholesale prices, but rates can also rise when market costs increase.
Do I need a smart meter for Flux?
Yes, Octopus Flux requires a smart meter to track when you use electricity and apply the correct rates for peak and off-peak periods.
Is Flux good for EV charging?
Flux is aimed at home battery and solar owners rather than at EV charging specifically: its cheap window is only three hours, which is short for a car. Go and Intelligent Go have longer overnight windows.
How does Flux compare to Go?
Both have a cheap overnight window, but it is not the same window and not the same shape: Go's runs 00:30 to 05:30 with one flat rate the rest of the day, while Flux's runs 02:00 to 05:00 and adds a dear 16:00 to 19:00 band on top. Go's rates change quarterly, Flux's daily. Flux suits a battery you can discharge into that evening band; Go suits an EV you charge overnight.
Can I use Flux with a home battery?
Yes, it is what the tariff is built for. You charge the battery in the 02:00 to 05:00 window and draw on it through the dear 16:00 to 19:00 band, so the gap between the two is where the saving comes from.
