Octopus smart meter requirements by tariff type
Understand connectable smart meters, half-hourly readings, export metering, Economy 7 registers and auxiliary load control for Octopus tariffs.

Short answer
Having a smart meter does not by itself guarantee eligibility. Octopus must be able to communicate with it, receive the reading frequency the product requires and, for managed products, connect to the eligible device. Export, Economy 7 and storage-heater arrangements introduce separate metering checks.
Half-hourly smart tariffs
Agile and other time-of-use smart products rely on suitable half-hourly readings for billing. A meter that appears smart on an in-home display can still be unable to send usable data to the supplier.
Managed EVs, batteries and heating
A working meter is only one condition. Intelligent products can also require an app, a supported vehicle, charger, battery or heating setup, reliable connectivity and permission for Octopus to control it.
Export tariffs
Export requires a suitable smart meter, dedicated export MPAN, consent to half-hourly readings and eligible generation. Import and export meters or registrations should not be treated as interchangeable.
Economy 7 and dual registers
A dual-register meter records day and night consumption separately. The actual switching times can depend on the region and meter arrangement, so confirm billed registers instead of assuming one national clock.
Storage-heater auxiliary control
Snug requires eligible traditional storage heating controlled through an auxiliary load control switch on a compatible SMETS2 meter. Not every SMETS2 or app-controlled heater setup qualifies.
When readings stop
Missing smart data can affect billing or eligibility under current terms. Check the Octopus account for recent readings and contact the supplier; third-party app data is not a substitute for supplier billing data.
Questions people ask
Does a SMETS2 meter guarantee access to every smart tariff?
No. Communication, reading frequency, account setup, product availability and equipment compatibility all still matter.
Can a SMETS1 meter work?
Some can, depending on model, enrolment and supplier connectivity. Ask Octopus to check the exact meter rather than relying on its generation alone.
Is an export MPAN the same as my import MPAN?
No. Export registration is separate and must be in place before export payments can begin.
