Octopus tariffs without a working smart meter

What to compare when you do not have a working smart meter, and why public tariff rates do not confirm availability for your meter.

Short answer

Without a smart meter that Octopus can read as required, dynamic half-hourly, managed smart and export products will generally not be available. A standard single-rate Flexible or Fixed quote may be possible, and some dual-register arrangements need case-by-case checks, but the public rate catalogue cannot confirm an offer for your meter or payment setup.

Start with standard quotes

Flexible and Fixed are simpler public rate families worth asking Octopus about. Availability, product version, payment method and exact price must come from the supplier quote.

Why Agile and managed products differ

Half-hourly tariffs need the supplier to know when energy was used. Managed EV, battery and storage-heater products can add device-control requirements on top of meter communication.

Economy 7 is case-specific

A traditional dual-register meter may support an Economy 7 arrangement, but register times, meter configuration and available product need supplier confirmation. Do not assume all non-smart meters are single-rate.

Export needs separate smart metering

Octopus export terms require suitable half-hourly export readings and an export MPAN. Generation equipment alone does not create a payable export account.

If a smart meter has gone dumb

Ask whether it can be enrolled, reconnected or replaced. A temporary communication problem and a permanently incompatible meter are different cases.

Octopus says it installs meters where properties and communications are suitable, subject to appointment and stock availability.
