Short answer

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump in England and Wales, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump. Until March 2027, homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas connection can get an extra £1,500. Hybrid systems do not qualify. There is one grant per property, and your installer applies for it.

What you can get

Grants by technology:

  • £7,500 towards an air source (air-to-water) heat pump.
  • £7,500 towards a ground source or water source heat pump.
  • £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump.
  • £5,000 towards a biomass boiler.
  • An extra £1,500 for air or ground source heat pumps, until March 2027, if the home uses oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection.

What does not qualify

Hybrid systems, such as a gas boiler paired with a heat pump, are excluded, as is replacing an existing low-carbon heating system. The scheme covers England and Wales. Scotland has its own funding through Home Energy Scotland.

After installation: the tariff

A heat pump moves your heating bill from gas to electricity, so the electricity tariff matters. Compare Cosy Octopus with Flexible using your own expected heat pump use.

Questions people ask

Do I apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme myself?

Your installer applies on your behalf and takes the grant off the price. Check eligibility on GOV.UK first.

Can I get the grant if I live in Scotland?

No. The scheme covers England and Wales. Scotland has separate grants and loans through Home Energy Scotland.
