Octopus account in credit or debit: what it means
What it means when your Octopus account is in credit or debit, when to ask for a refund and when to change your Direct Debit instead.

Short answer
Credit means you have paid more than you have used so far; debit means you have used more than you have paid. Some credit is normal before winter. If credit keeps growing all year, you can request a refund in the app or lower your Direct Debit. If debt keeps growing, raise your payment early rather than facing a large catch-up later.
Why balances swing through the year
Equal monthly payments cover very unequal monthly bills. Most homes use far more energy in winter, so a healthy account builds credit from spring to autumn and spends it in winter. Judge your balance against the time of year, not just whether it is positive or negative.
Getting credit back
You can request a refund of credit from the payments section of the Octopus app or online account. Octopus may ask for an up-to-date meter reading first, so the refund is based on actual usage. Before asking for a large refund in autumn, check you will not need that credit for winter.
Dealing with debt
If your balance is in debt and getting worse, the usual fix is a higher Direct Debit, using Octopus’s Balance Forecast to pick an amount. If you are struggling to pay, contact Octopus early. Help is available, and it is easier to agree a plan before the debt grows.
Questions people ask
Should I always ask for my credit back?
Not necessarily. Credit built up in summer usually pays for higher winter bills. Large credit that keeps growing all year is the sign that a refund or a lower payment makes sense.
Does Octopus refund credit when I leave?
Any credit left on a closed account should be refunded after your final bill.
