Short answer

If your smart meter sends half-hourly readings, you can see them in the Octopus app and account. You can also download them through Octopus’s free API, using the API key, MPAN and meter serial number shown on the developer page of your online account. This site’s usage tools use the same API and run in your browser.

In the app

The Octopus app shows usage by day, week and month, and for most smart meters, half hour by half hour. It is the quickest way to see when you use the most.

Through the API

To get the raw data, open the developer page in your Octopus online account. It shows the three things you need:

  • Your API key. Treat it like a password.
  • Your MPAN, the 13-digit electricity supply number.
  • Your meter serial number.

Using the data

With half-hourly data you can price your real usage on any tariff, check a bill, or spot missing readings. This site’s private tools do all three without your data leaving your browser.

Questions people ask

Is the Octopus API free?

Yes. Customers can use their own API key to read their consumption and published prices.

Why are some half hours missing?

The meter may not have sent them. Check the data gaps tool and report long gaps to Octopus.
