How the choices work

Cheapest compares published p/kWh. Cleanest compares published regional carbon intensity. Balanced gives price and carbon equal weight after normalising this available window; it is a transparent trade-off, not a universal definition of value.

The calculator only uses complete future half-hours with a published price. It includes today and tomorrow where tomorrow’s rates have been published, at 30-minute granularity. London daylight-saving clock changes use their real local times, so a day need not have 48 half-hours.

Worked example

For Agile Octopus in London (GSP C), a 60-minute cheapest run can select two adjacent published half-hours; the result identifies each London-time interval and its mean published rate.

Limitations

This is not a bill: an average p/kWh does not include your energy use, standing charge, or other bill components. Carbon is never filled in; cheapest can still work when it is absent, while cleanest and balanced require coverage for every selected half-hour. The calculator does not predict unpublished prices or carbon.
